US Rep. Haley Stevens Faces Backlash for Endorsing Republican Senate Candidate

Washington:Leading Democratic politicians and senior aides have sharply criticized US Rep. Haley Stevens for her unexpected endorsement of Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the Michigan US Senate race against Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed. This development comes just two days before the crucial midterm elections in the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, US Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has strongly condemned Stevens' decision, calling it a "despicable betrayal" and affirming that Senate lawmakers remain united behind their party's nominee. The endorsement led to an immediate walkout by Stevens' Capitol Hill staff, with her long-time chief of staff, Justin German, confirming his resignation along with several aides to support El-Sayed.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel announced that Stevens is no longer a member of the party, while US Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin emphasized that voters prioritize issues like gas and grocery prices over political drama. Slotkin urged politicians to focus on serving the greater good rather than personal interests.

The Michigan Senate race is critical, potentially determining whether Republicans maintain control of the US Senate during the last two years of Donald Trump's presidency or if Democrats gain the majority, complicating Trump's legislative agenda. Several Democratic representatives, including Jared Huffman and Jamie Raskin, have expressed their disapproval and surprise at Stevens' endorsement of Rogers.

In response, Stevens stated in a video on social media platform X that she felt unwelcome in El-Sayed's campaign, leading to her decision to endorse Rogers.
