Tel aviv: The US has notified Israel that the authorization permitting it to operate without restrictions in Lebanon has been revoked, as reported by Channel 13 on Monday, citing insights from an unnamed senior Israeli official.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israel was recently informed by the US that the previous approval for unrestricted military actions in Lebanon is no longer valid. This development was shared amidst reports of US President Donald Trump imposing operational limitations on Israel, extending beyond Lebanon to other areas. This move comes despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims that Israeli forces retain complete operational freedom in southern Lebanon.

Channel 13 further detailed that Israeli political leaders have provided the military with new directives, specifying the boundaries of permissible and restricted actions within Lebanon. These restrictions include prohibitions on military operations in key areas such as Beirut and the Tyre district in the south.

Earlier on Monday, the Israeli newspaper Maariv highlighted differing perspectives between Washington and Tel Aviv concerning Lebanon’s situation. The publication noted that the US views southern Lebanon within a larger geopolitical framework, which encompasses the Strait of Hormuz, energy pricing, the Iranian nuclear agenda, and the Trump administration’s diplomatic ambitions. Conversely, Israel perceives any early withdrawal from southern Lebanon as a potential ‘sign of weakness’ and a possible concession to Hezbollah.

The ongoing Israeli military campaign in Lebanon has resulted in over 4,000 fatalities, more than 12,000 injuries, and the displacement of over 1 million residents since its commencement on March 2, according to Lebanese authorities. Israeli forces continue to occupy territories in southern Lebanon, with some areas under control for decades and others captured during the 2023-2024 conflict.
