US Secretary of State Acknowledges Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts with Iran

Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed gratitude to Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for Pakistan's mediation efforts aimed at ending the US war against Iran. In a meeting held in Washington, Rubio conveyed his appreciation for the constructive role Pakistan has played in furthering President Trump's vision for peace in the Middle East and its mediation efforts with Iran, as stated by spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

According to Anadolu Agency, the secretary and deputy prime minister agreed on the significance of strengthening a partnership that promotes security and prosperity for both nations. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry highlighted the positive trajectory of bilateral relations between Pakistan and the US over the past year. The discussions covered a range of issues like economic and trade relations, cultural cooperation, and counter-terrorism and security partnerships.

Rubio acknowledged Pakistan's diplomatic efforts, commending the close engagement and continued coordination between Pakistani leadership and the US Administration. Dar expressed confidence that Pakistan's ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability, with support from friendly nations, will yield positive outcomes.

The conflict in the Middle East escalated following US and Israeli strikes against Iran in late February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks on Israel and US allies in the Gulf while closing the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was achieved on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but further talks in Islamabad did not lead to a lasting resolution. President Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.

Efforts to resume direct talks and resolve the conflict continue, with Trump indicating plans to meet with officials to make a "final determination" on a proposal. This proposal reportedly includes Iran's commitment to never acquire a nuclear weapon and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. However, a decision was not reached during a recent Situation Room meeting, as reported by The New York Times, and confirmed by the White House.
