US Secretary of State Rubio Highlights Challenges in Iran Deal and Strengthened US-Hungary Ties

Budapest: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the complexities of reaching an agreement with Iran, attributing the challenges to the ideological leadership in Tehran while affirming Washington's dedication to diplomatic efforts.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rubio remarked at a joint press conference with Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban that negotiating with Iran is complicated due to its governance by 'radical Shia clerics' who base decisions on 'pure theology.' Despite these difficulties, Rubio assured that the US is committed to pursuing diplomacy, highlighting President Donald Trump's preference for peaceful and negotiated outcomes.

Rubio also addressed the necessity of engaging with major global powers, including China, despite existing tensions. He acknowledged the need to pragmatically manage differences between the US and China, given their significant global influence.

The discussions between Rubio and Orban also covered the war in Ukraine, where Rubio underscored the US's role as a mediator, emphasizing that the US aims to facilitate discussions rather than impose solutions. Orban expressed support for US peace initiatives and credited Trump with fostering diplomatic momentum.

In terms of energy security, Orban noted that a US waiver permits Hungary to use Russian gas and oil, ensuring stable and affordable energy supplies. Both leaders highlighted the unprecedented strength of US-Hungary relations, describing the current bilateral ties as a 'new golden age.'
