Washington: The US Supreme Court on Friday temporarily allowed the Trump administration to continue construction of a White House ballroom, pausing a lower court order that had halted much of the project. In a one-page order, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that the preliminary injunction issued on April 16 by the US District Court for the District of Columbia would be 'stayed pending further order' from either the chief justice or the full Supreme Court. This means that while the stay does not resolve the underlying legal dispute, it allows construction to move forward for now.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Donald Trump expressed his gratitude for the decision of the United States Supreme Court. He stated that the Military/Ballroom Complex being built on the grounds of the White House is vital for national security and promised that it would be the greatest of its kind. Trump shared his thoughts on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing that the project is something that presidents have wanted for 150 years and that the military has been seeking for the past 100 years. He further mentioned that construction is under budget and ahead of schedule.
Last year, Trump announced the ambitious construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, which is estimated to cost $400 million. However, a DC appeals court previously ruled that the ballroom project requires congressional approval. In response to this ruling, the Trump administration recently petitioned the Supreme Court to allow the continuation of the construction, criticizing lower courts for overstepping their authority and arguing that the project is necessary for national security.
