Tokyo: Visiting US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi engaged in a pivotal discussion on the evolving state of US-China relations in Tokyo. This discussion comes just ahead of a significant visit by the US president to Beijing, underscoring the importance of regional diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific arena.
According to Anadolu Agency, Takaichi utilized US social media platform X to announce that the meeting included an exchange of views on various challenges confronting the Indo-Pacific region. The dialogue further extended to strategies aimed at fortifying the supply chains between Japan and the United States, emphasizing the role of advanced artificial intelligence models in mitigating risks.
Prime Minister Takaichi highlighted the commitment to enhancing the Japan-US alliance through this close cooperation. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Bessent emphasized Washington’s desire for “rapid and consistent progress” on an investment agreement with Tokyo, reflecting the administration’s priority in reinforcing economic ties with Japan.
Bessent’s meeting with Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa highlighted the ongoing positive collaboration between the two nations, particularly concerning critical minerals and supply chains. Following their discussions, Bessent reiterated on X the necessity for swift advancements regarding the US-Japan investment agreement.
In a subsequent meeting with Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, Bessent reaffirmed the robust economic partnership between the United States and Japan. He noted the ongoing communication and coordination in addressing market volatilities, emphasizing the consistent and robust nature of their interactions. Bessent also expressed support for Japan’s efforts to establish an investment screening mechanism, further solidifying the economic alliance between the two nations.
