Ankara: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday urged Beijing to fulfill its trade commitments during a high-level conversation with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The virtual meeting also featured US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

According to Anadolu Agency, Bessent stated on the US social media platform X that he stressed the importance of Beijing meeting its commitments regarding rare earths and US agricultural products. The talks also centered on implementing trade and investment boards, a mechanism designed to promote a more "balanced, fair, and constructive" economic relationship between the world's two largest economies.

The discussion acts as a precursor to Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to the US in late September. Despite recent accusations from President Donald Trump regarding China's interference in US elections, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that the summit will proceed as planned.

The dialogue follows an agreement from a May meeting between Trump and Xi, where Beijing committed to addressing Washington's concerns about supply chain shortages for rare earths and other essential minerals. This agreement also requires China to lift restrictions on the sale of production equipment and processing technologies for these materials.

Furthermore, Beijing has agreed to purchase at least $17 billion annually in US agricultural products through 2028, building on previous commitments.
