London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Thursday the £250 billion ($338.8 billion) investment agreement signed between the US and the UK is the largest agreement in this field in British history and will create jobs for 15,000 people.
According to Anadolu Agency, addressing business representatives at a reception held at Chequers, the Prime Minister's office in Aylesbury, Starmer stated that the UK-US relationship is a special one, noting that the ties between the two countries are the foundation of US-UK security, freedom, and prosperity.
"Together, we support over 2.5 million jobs in both our countries," Starmer said, adding that the US is the UK's largest trading partner. He highlighted that the investment package is unprecedented in British history, bringing significant investment across the UK and creating 15,000 jobs in regions including Belfast, Birmingham, Hartlepool, and the Humber.
Starmer underscored that the UK is unique in the West, besides the US, with a trillion-dollar technology sector. He mentioned that the country is home to top universities and holds the second-highest number of Nobel Prize winners after the US. Further, he announced plans to sign a technology cooperation agreement with Trump, with several US technology companies set to invest in the UK.
Highlighting the importance of energy for technological advancements, Starmer noted the signing of a new civil nuclear power agreement to support this development.
Trump stated that the investment agreement is catalyzing a significant wave of private sector deals worth over $350 million, which will strengthen US-UK relations. He remarked on the global impact of artificial intelligence and acknowledged Nvidia CEO Jensen's contributions to the field.
The US president noted that US investments this year will surpass $17 trillion, a milestone never reached before. Trump emphasized the financial benefits from tariffs on other countries' goods as a strategy to attract substantial investment to the US.
Trump argued that the US economy reached its zenith during his first presidential term and announced plans to significantly reduce government regulations on companies.
The US-UK deal encompasses investments in AI infrastructure and research, quantum technologies, civil nuclear energy, telecommunications infrastructure, and cyber capabilities, as per a statement by the UK government.
