Ankara: US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz and Rep. Ted Lieu engaged in a heated confrontation Wednesday during a House hearing regarding the number of American soldiers wounded in the war with Iran.

According to Anadolu Agency, the confrontation intensified when Lieu criticized Waltz for not knowing the exact number of US troops wounded. Lieu, a Democrat from California, corrected Waltz, who had estimated the casualties as "over 100," by citing official data from the Defense Casualty Analysis System showing 482 wounded American personnel.

Waltz dismissed Lieu's criticism as a "spin" intended for future election campaign materials. He referenced Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's recent testimony to defend his position. In response, Lieu accused Waltz of being "callous" with the lives of troops and providing "false information to Congress," going as far as to suggest that Waltz should resign.

Further tension arose when Lieu highlighted Waltz's appointment as UN ambassador, alleging it was due to his dismissal by US President Donald Trump from his national security adviser role. Lieu claimed the dismissal occurred because Waltz added a journalist to a chat group discussing sensitive military plans.

The debate also touched upon the security of US forces stationed in Jordan. Lieu questioned Waltz on whether he trusted Jordanian authorities to protect American personnel amid recent regional strikes.

The exchange was so intense that other committee members interjected, issuing a point of order to request the removal of Lieu's 'derogatory language' from the official record.
