Brussels: The US is urging its European allies and Canada to take on the primary responsibility for conventional defense in Europe. This strategic move is aimed at freeing up American military power to address potential challenges in the Pacific, according to US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker.

According to Anadolu Agency, Whitaker conveyed the US's position during an appearance on Fox Business, emphasizing the need for strong and capable allies. He highlighted that European partners had diminished their military capabilities following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, leaving American taxpayers to shoulder a disproportionate burden. While there have been efforts by European nations to enhance their defense capabilities, Whitaker noted that the progress has been insufficient and slow.

This push is part of a broader strategic realignment by the administration of US President Donald Trump, which seeks to redirect military resources from European land defense to counter potential threats from China, as outlined in the 2026 US National Defense Strategy. Under this strategic framework, the US expects economically robust European nations to provide conventional frontline forces, with the Pentagon focusing on nuclear deterrence and reinforcement options.

The diplomatic initiative is an extension of earlier calls made by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in February 2025, urging allies to assume greater responsibility for continental security. The Pentagon subsequently formalized this policy by initiating a six-month review in July to reassess troop deployments across Europe.
