Seattle: The governor of Washington state, Bob Ferguson, has issued a proclamation recognizing February 18 to March 19, 2026, as the holy month of Ramadan for the Muslim community within the state. This aligns with Washington’s status as the first state in the U.S. to designate Eid as an official state holiday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ferguson conveyed his wishes of ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ to the Muslim community, emphasizing their integral role in Washington’s social fabric. He acknowledged the significant contributions of Muslim residents to various sectors, including the state’s economic vitality, public service, education systems, healthcare institutions, small businesses, technology sector, arts and culture, and nonprofit and community organizations.

The proclamation described Ramadan as a sacred month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, observed by millions globally and by thousands within Washington. It highlighted how the observance reinforces values such as generosity, self-discipline, gratitude, and care for neighbors.

Ferguson also referenced a 2025 state law that officially recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays, positioning Washington as the first state to implement such recognition. The governor’s proclamation declared the alignment of Ramadan’s observance with the lunar calendar, based on moon sighting.

In addition to the proclamation, Ferguson shared his message on social media, extending his supportive wishes to Muslim Washingtonians embarking on a month of fasting and prayer.
