‘We Are Moving Forward on Ukraine’s EU Accession,’ European Council Chief Costa Says as He Meets Zelenskyy

Ankara: There is progress on Ukraine's EU accession, European Council President Antonio Costa said on Wednesday as he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa highlighted that the opening of a new negotiating cluster for Ukraine's EU accession should be coming soon. He shared his remarks on the social media platform X, indicating a positive trajectory in the accession process.

Costa emphasized the growing international support for Ukraine, asserting that global momentum is building to deliver peace through strength. He mentioned that there is an increase in financial, energy, and military support for Ukraine, coupled with heightened pressure on Russia to engage in meaningful peace talks.

Addressing Russia's recent military actions, Costa stated that Moscow has not succeeded in achieving its military objectives. "Russia's escalating attacks on Ukraine's cities and infrastructure are proof it has failed to achieve its objectives on the battlefield," he remarked, reinforcing the EU's commitment to standing with Ukraine.

EU leaders had previously agreed to open accession talks with Ukraine in December 2023, marking a significant step in Ukraine's path toward EU membership.
