Abuja: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched four initiatives worth more than £105 million (over $120 million), the West African bloc announced on Wednesday. These EU-funded projects are designed to enhance the capabilities of ECOWAS by fostering peace and governance, strengthening institutional capacity, boosting regional trade competitiveness, and promoting service sector exports under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
According to Anadolu Agency, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray expressed 'heartfelt gratitude' to the EU, Germany, and Spain for their 'steadfast' support during the launch event held in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. He reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to regional stability, sustainable development, and citizen-focused governance through these partnerships.
The event was attended by senior representatives from ECOWAS, the EU, Germany, Spain, and various implementing partners, including the German aid agency GIZ, the UN Industrial Development Organization, the French public agency Expertise France, and the Spanish aid agency AECID. Founded on May 28, 1975, ECOWAS aims to facilitate collaboration in sectors such as trade, finance, and security to promote stability and development in the West African region.
Over the years, ECOWAS has been instrumental in tackling regional challenges and advancing the well-being of its member states, playing a crucial role in fostering collaboration and development across West Africa.
