Nairobi:The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised against imposing travel or trade restrictions on Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Uganda following the death of an Ebola patient in Kenya.
According to Anadolu Agency, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on social media platform X that Kenya reported an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus in a Kenyan citizen who had resided in the DRC. The individual became ill while in the DRC and sought treatment at various hospitals before traveling to Nairobi through Kampala, Uganda, where he died on Monday.
The WHO is collaborating with the governments of Kenya, the DRC, and Uganda to conduct contact tracing, enhance surveillance, and implement screening and other response measures to identify potential cases and prevent further spread of the virus, Tedros stated.
He emphasized that WHO does not recommend any restrictions on travel or trade with the affected countries based on current information. The organization will continue to monitor and verify any travel and trade measures related to this epidemic, as necessary.
