Guangzhou: A genetically modified pig lung was transplanted into a brain-dead man in China for the first time and successfully functioned for nine days.
According to Anadolu Agency, the study was published in the journal Nature Medicine and described the groundbreaking procedure conducted by doctors at Guangzhou Medical University's hospital. The recipient, a 39-year-old man, had suffered a brain hemorrhage, making him a suitable candidate for the experimental transplant.
The pig lung used in the procedure had undergone six genetic modifications. The donor pig was raised in a strictly controlled, ultra-clean environment throughout its life to minimize the risk of complications. The medical team took extensive precautions to monitor infection and rejection risks, administering several medications to the patient.
Researchers reported no immediate signs of rejection after the transplant, but complications arose within a day. Fluid accumulation led to widespread swelling, likely due to blood flow issues. Although there were indications of partial recovery in the days following the procedure, the man's body eventually began to show signs of organ rejection.
The study emphasized that while the experiment demonstrates the potential for pig-to-human lung xenotransplantation, significant challenges remain concerning organ rejection and infection. The researchers highlighted the need for further improvement in the method to address these issues effectively.
