Yemen Faces Massive Displacement Crisis Amid Funding Shortages

Taiz:More than 200,000 people in Yemen have been displaced since fighting escalated, with the situation worsening due to insufficient funding, as reported by the UN migration agency on Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the displacement comprises over 33,700 households, with the majority having been displaced since September 1. The UN agency highlighted the dire conditions faced by these individuals, emphasizing the urgent need for shelter, food, and safety.

The number of displaced people has increased significantly, with figures rising from 76,000 in mid-September to over 145,000 by the end of the month. Displacement has affected 10 governorates, with Taiz being the most impacted, accounting for 57% of the displaced population. Other affected areas include Lahej, Aden, Abyan, and Hudaydah.

Additionally, the crisis has extended beyond Yemen's borders, with over 3,700 people fleeing to Djibouti by sea. Many of these refugees arrive in overcrowded boats, lacking essential supplies such as food and water. Women and children constitute the majority of those making this dangerous journey.

The UN agency emphasized the need for immediate international funding to provide lifesaving assistance to those affected. Relief stocks are dwindling as humanitarian needs outpace available resources. The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa, leading to a Saudi-led intervention in support of the recognized government in 2015.
