Taiz: Yemeni government forces announced they successfully thwarted a Houthi attack and executed airstrikes targeting Houthi positions and reinforcements in the southwestern province of Taiz. The region has seen intensified fighting on multiple fronts, including the neighboring Lahj province.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Taiz Military Axis, affiliated with the Yemeni army, released a statement confirming the prevention of the Houthi offensive on the Al-Anin front in Jabal Habashi district, located in the western part of the province. The army did not disclose further details regarding the incident.
In another statement, the military command reported that warplanes attacked Houthi positions and reinforcements at strategic locations, including the Al-Dhikra junction and areas such as Al-Dimna and Al-Rahida, situated southeast of Taiz. The results of these airstrikes remain unspecified.
Earlier, Fayyad Alnoman, an official from Yemen's Information Ministry, mentioned on the social media platform X that local sources confirmed an airstrike on Houthi reinforcements at the Al-Dharifah junction in the Al-Wazi'iyah district, west of Taiz.
In a related event, a Yemeni air force operation targeted a Houthi communications center in the Al-Hawban area, east of Taiz city, as indicated by field reports. Alnoman also referenced ongoing intense clashes between government forces and Houthi fighters along the Kahbub mountain range, which is strategically significant due to its proximity to Yemen's western coast and key locations such as Bab el-Mandeb and the city of Dhubab.
Government forces reportedly gained control of several highlands within the Kahbub range and initiated a counterattack towards Houthi-held positions. Alnoman previously reported clashes on the Al-Anin and Bilad al-Wafi fronts in Jabal Habashi district, west of Taiz.
The Houthi group has yet to comment on these developments. The western region of Taiz has experienced a surge in hostilities in recent weeks. On Wednesday, Yemeni government forces announced targeting Houthi positions on the Al-Kadha front, complemented by airstrikes on Houthi gatherings west of Taiz.
The escalation in fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis has been ongoing since early July, disrupting a period of relative tranquility established by a UN-brokered truce in April 2022. The conflict in Yemen began when the Houthis took control of the capital Sanaa and other provinces in September 2014, leading to a Saudi-led coalition intervention in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized government.
