Ankara: Yemen's Houthi group claimed Thursday that it carried out attacks using dozens of ballistic missiles and drones against Saudi military sites in the southwestern Jazan region.

According to Anadolu Agency,Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group launched an operation targeting operations rooms, command-and-control centers, weapons depots and other sites in the Al-Tuwal area.

Saree said the Houthis also targeted missile launch sites at Al-Daghareer camp and several Saudi military camps in Jazan.

He claimed the strikes were 'accurate and direct' and resulted in hundreds of casualties for Saudi forces, as well as Yemeni and Sudanese personnel.

Saree also claimed that several Saudi weapons depots were destroyed or set ablaze.

Spokesman of the Saudi-led coalition for Yemen, Turki al-Maliki, said earlier that six ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi rebels were intercepted and destroyed, thwarting an attempt to target the Saudi cities of Taif and Yanbu.

'The escalation and violations of the Houthi terrorist militia will be dealt with firmly,' he warned.

Maliki did not provide details on whether the interceptions caused any damage.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense said that the danger had passed in Mecca, Taif and the northwestern region of Tabuk, following emergency warnings issued earlier for those areas as well as Jeddah and Yanbu.

Saudi Arabia has faced missile and drone attacks attributed to the Houthis in recent days.

The Houthis announced July 20 a 'maritime blockade' on Saudi Arabia before later claiming missile and drone attacks on Saudi-linked vessels and sites.

Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government since March 2015 against the Houthis, who have controlled the national capital, Sanaa, and several provinces since September 2014.
