Cairo: Egypt's foreign minister emphasized on Monday the significance of Yemen's stability for the security of the region and the Red Sea. This assertion was made during a meeting in Cairo with Yemeni Foreign Minister Shaya Zindani, where Badr Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's unwavering support for Yemen's unity, institutions, independence, and territorial integrity, as stated in an Egyptian Foreign Ministry readout.

According to Anadolu Agency, Yemen has been engulfed in violence since 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi group seized the capital, Sanaa, and much of the country from the Yemeni government. Abdelatty highlighted that Yemen's security and stability are vital for maintaining regional security and stability, including that of the Red Sea.

The Egyptian diplomat expressed support for initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, which he noted should align with the aspirations of the Yemeni people and alleviate their humanitarian suffering, according to the statement.

Tensions in the Red Sea have started to ease following a ceasefire agreement that ended hostilities in the Gaza Strip, where over 48,300 people were killed. During the conflict, Yemen's Houthi group launched drone and missile attacks on Israeli or Tel Aviv-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea, demonstrating support for Gaza. These attacks contributed to a significant decrease in revenues from Egypt's Suez Canal, a vital foreign currency source.

In late December, Egypt reported that the Suez Canal's revenues had declined by $7 billion during 2024 due to tensions in the Red Sea.
