Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that any potential territorial arrangements discussed in ongoing peace negotiations should be determined exclusively by the Ukrainian populace. He stated that such decisions could be made through elections or a referendum, asserting the necessity of a clear stance from the people of Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy's comments were made as Kyiv engages in talks with the United States about proposals that include creating a 'free economic' or 'demilitarized' zone in parts of the Donetsk region. This proposal involves the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces while preventing Russian troops from entering these areas. Zelenskyy highlighted unresolved issues related to control, monitoring, and preventing Russian infiltration under civilian disguises.

Zelenskyy remarked that the proposed model does not align with Ukraine's interests but maintained that dialogue with international partners continues as Ukraine seeks equitable solutions based on parity and security assurances. He also stressed that the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in maintaining their positions and repelling Russian attacks significantly influences the diplomatic process.

The discussions are taking place amidst a US-backed peace plan and Washington's encouragement for Ukraine to conduct presidential elections. Zelenskyy has indicated that Kyiv is prepared for elections once necessary legal changes are made and security conditions are met. He previously described the territorial issue as the most challenging aspect of the negotiations.
