Ankara: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized Trkiye's critical diplomatic efforts in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, as he announced upcoming peace talks in Istanbul involving a Ukrainian delegation led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy noted the Ukrainian delegation's visit to Trkiye commenced with high-level meetings in Ankara. He highlighted a significant conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which he described as meaningful both politically and personally, underscoring Trkiye's support for Ukraine. He appreciated Ankara's involvement in facilitating negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and international actors, including the United States.

Despite expressing concerns about the Russian delegation's composition, which he claimed lacks decision-making authority, Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine's participation in the Istanbul talks, albeit with a slightly reduced delegation. He mentioned his decision to send a Ukrainian delegation to Istanbul, emphasizing the importance of the discussions.

Following his engagements in Ankara, Zelenskyy departed Trkiye but left his delegation in Istanbul. He is set to travel to Tirana, Albania, for the sixth summit of the European Political Community, which will convene over 40 leaders.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Medinsky, leading the Russian delegation, stated at a press conference in Istanbul that his team is fully authorized to negotiate. He emphasized that the delegation was sanctioned by a presidential decree and prepared under the guidance of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Medinsky called for a constructive approach to achieve long-term peace through direct negotiations with Ukraine.
