Brussels:Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the European Union not to relax sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the importance of a "strong" 22nd sanctions package from the 27-member bloc. Zelenskyy spoke during an EU leaders' summit in Brussels, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to prolong the war in Ukraine into the next year, and stressing the need for Europe to be prepared.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy warned that easing sanctions could lead to others exploiting the situation, as Putin seeks financial means to fund the war by any available means. He argued that a diesel deal between the US and Russia would not mitigate the impact on global markets caused by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, but rather funnel more funds into Russia's military efforts.
Zelenskyy called for robust sanctions targeting those involved in producing Russian ballistic missiles, advanced communications systems, and drones. He highlighted the financial burden of the conflict on Ukraine, projecting costs of £155 billion next year, with an additional need for at least £70 billion for defense spending.
The Ukrainian leader also advocated for dealing with Russian frozen assets and urged European leaders to bolster air defense systems, specifically requesting a winter package with 300 Patriot interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the EU's support and progress towards Ukraine's EU accession, urging that Ukraine and Moldova's membership processes remain linked. He underscored the need for European unity and security, highlighting efforts to stop Putin's war as a broader initiative for continental security guarantees.
He met with various European leaders, including the presidents of the European Council and European Commission, and prime ministers from Hungary, Finland, and Sweden. On the sidelines, he also held discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and other European leaders.
