Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on Monday that intelligence reports suggest Russia may carry out "massive strikes" during the Christmas holiday period, with ongoing negotiations with the US to procure dozens of Patriot systems for air defense.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy stated that Russia might execute significant attacks on Christmas, following a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. He highlighted that he had ordered intelligence services to enhance their efforts to provide clarity after Russia dismissed ceasefire proposals from Germany and the US.

Zelenskyy stressed that air defense is a top priority, especially for protecting Ukrainian communities on December 23, 24, and 25. He acknowledged a shortage of air defense systems and revealed Ukraine's efforts to secure a strong contract with the US for several dozen Patriot systems through various programs.

He warned that if Russia fails to engage seriously in negotiations to end the nearly four-year war, Kyiv would respond appropriately. This statement came after the General Staff meeting, where Zelenskyy mentioned that Russian forces had increased their attack intensity, resulting in higher Russian losses.

Zelenskyy noted that the meeting also covered briefings on "our deep strikes" and the needs of the defense forces. Discussions included the state of air defense, particularly in the Odesa region, and potential candidates for the position of commander of the Air Command South.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported a car bomb explosion in southern Moscow, which killed Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of operational training at the Russian General Staff. There has been no direct comment from Kyiv regarding this incident.
