Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stern warning to Russia, indicating that any attempts to target Ukraine's energy system this winter will be met with retaliation. "Russia knows that if they strike - and they are preparing to strike our energy system this winter - Russia will receive the same in return," Zelenskyy stated on the US social media platform X. He emphasized that Ukraine would respond appropriately to any disruptions caused by potential Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy reiterated that while Ukraine is prepared to defend itself, negotiations remain the preferred approach to resolving the ongoing conflict. He proposed a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States to establish an energy truce, unblock the Black Sea, and facilitate the exchange of prisoners and civilians, including children currently held in Russia.
Zelenskyy highlighted the broader implications of the conflict, warning that prolonging the war could have significant consequences for Russia and the global economy, particularly concerning food and energy security. Disruptions to Black Sea grain exports, he noted, could exacerbate shortages in vulnerable countries, likening the potential situation to the strategic Strait of Hormuz but centered on agriculture.
In his address, Zelenskyy urged the US Congress to pass sanctions legislation supported by the late Senator Lindsey Graham and called for more decisive action from the administration of US President Donald Trump. "Sanctions need to be imposed now," he asserted, emphasizing the importance of depriving Russia of the financial means to sustain its military efforts against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also expressed frustration over the perceived delay in decision-making processes, stressing the urgent need for timely actions to counter Russian aggression.
