Ankara: The grim toll of Palestinian athletes killed by Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip has reached 1,014, encompassing players, coaches, referees, and officials from the Palestinian Football Association, a Palestinian sports official reported to Anadolu Agency.
According to Anadolu Agency, the figures rose following the death of Abdel Fattah Abu al-Aish, a player for Jabalia Services Club, who was killed in an Israeli strike targeting an electric motorcycle in Gaza City's Tal al-Hawa neighborhood. Mustafa Siam, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Sports Media Federation, stated that Abu al-Aish had been preparing to compete in the Thousand Martyrs' Cup, a tournament organized by the Palestinian Football Association set to commence on September 4.
Siam emphasized that Abu al-Aish's death is part of a broader pattern of "continued Israeli attacks on Palestinian sports," which have claimed the lives of numerous players, coaches, referees, and association officials. He also highlighted the devastating impact on Gaza's sports infrastructure, with stadiums, clubs, sports halls, and academies being destroyed, alongside the bulldozing of several sports facilities. This destruction has led to what Siam described as an "existential" crisis for Palestinian sports.
Abu al-Aish, a defender for Jabalia Services Club and briefly for Ahli Beit Hanoun, was laid to rest in a funeral held in Gaza City, attended by fellow athletes and supporters. His club mourned him as a promising talent from northern Gaza. The losses are not confined to Gaza, with Palestinian athletes also facing fatalities in the occupied West Bank, alongside detentions of players, coaches, and administrators.
The Palestinian Sports Media Federation reported that Israel has obliterated over 50 of Gaza's 56 sports clubs and approximately 20 five-a-side football fields, originally established with FIFA's support. Despite these challenges, Palestinian sports bodies were preparing to resume some activities and competitions amid severe resource shortages.
Efforts to rejuvenate organized sports in Gaza began in March with the initiation of a five-a-side football tournament, utilizing the few fields that remained intact. However, the overarching challenges of facility destruction and personnel loss persist.
The conflict in Gaza, initiated by Israel on October 8, 2023, has resulted in over 73,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 174,000 injuries, primarily affecting women and children, according to Palestinian sources. Despite a ceasefire since October 10, 2025, Israel reportedly continues to breach the agreement, with ongoing attacks resulting in 1,320 Palestinian deaths and 4,385 injuries, as per Gaza's Health Ministry.
