The 'Friends of Nicosia' Association and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation presented 'Music in the City', last Friday, a spectacular open-air music event that captivated hundreds of people in the heart of the city as well as many more watching on their screens on CyBC Channel 1.
A press release says that under the imposing bridge of Eleftheria Square, in Nicosia "where modernity meets the historic walls and traditional architecture of the old city, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the steady baton of the world-acclaimed maestro Zoe Zeniodi, performed with lots of energy and emotion for a multitude of audience spreading joy and delight".
The programme comprised romantic and contemporary works from the operatic repertoire, high-spirited dance pieces by Arturo Marquez and Antonín Dvorák, as well as an orchestrated traditional Cypriot song, among others. The rising Cypriot baritone Yiorgo Ioannou amazed the audience performing famous arias from Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia and Donizetti's Don Pasquale.
"People's evident enthusiasm and joy was expressed with loud cheers and profuse applause. What is also evident is people's need for this type of open-air concerts, for a symphony orchestra that reaches out to the wider public, for an orchestra for all", the press release reads.
