We are at the UNSG’s disposal so that impasse is lifted as soon as possible, Letymbiotis says

We are at the disposal of the UN Secretary-General, with a sincere desire to make every possible effort, so that the impasse in the Cyprus issue can be lifted as soon as possible, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Friday. Asked by journalists whether the Government has any information on the intentions of the UN Secretary General after his personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, submitted this week her report, Letymbiotis referred to what the UNSG's Spokesperson himself said, that the Secretary-General, after studying Holguin's report and evaluating her recommendations, is to invite the two leaders to inform them of his own decisions regarding the next steps as regards the effort toward lifting the impasse and restarting the negotiations. 'Once again, we will reiterate that we are at the disposal of the UN Secretary-General, with a sincere desire to make every possible effort so that this deadlock is lifted as soon as possible', he said. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, w hen Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguin as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
