The close friendship and excellent relations between Cyprus and Georgia were reaffirmed on Thursday during a courtesy meeting between the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, and the new Ambassador of Georgia to Cyprus, Konstantine Kvachakidze.
During the meeting, the mutual desire for further strengthening cooperation, especially at the parliamentary level, was expressed.
A House of Representatives press release said Demetriou thanked Georgia for its consistent support in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, in line with international law and UN resolutions.
She reiterated the commitment of the Cypriot side to restart substantial talks within the framework of the United Nations, aiming for a fair and sustainable solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. On the occasion of the UN General Assembly, Demetriou expressed hope for progress and emphasized that Turkey’s demand for a “two-state” solution is unacceptable, as it would legitimize the results of the Turkish invasio
n.
She also condemned the escalating provocations by Turkey in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), highlighting that they hinder efforts to create a positive climate.
Ambassador Kvachakidze reaffirmed his country’s support for the resolution of the Cyprus issue, noting that Georgia fully understands the situation due to its own experience with foreign occupation. He thanked Cyprus for its support of Georgia’s European path, highlighting the significant reforms the country has achieved toward EU integration.
Demetriou assured Kvachakidze of Cyprus’ full support for Georgia’s European course and stressed the need to further promote the EU accession prospects of the Western Balkans.
It was agreed to continue the close cooperation between the House of Representatives and the Georgian Embassy to strengthen inter-parliamentary exchanges, following the parliamentary elections in Georgia next October.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of U
N-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
