Ankara: An explosion rocked a weapons depot in northwestern Libya late Friday, with media reports and witnesses reporting that ammunition and rockets were propelled into surrounding areas.
According to Anadolu Agency, witnesses reported hearing a massive explosion that shook Misrata, approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of Tripoli. Misrata is recognized as the second-largest city in western Libya after the capital. Thick smoke was seen rising from the headquarters of the Al-I'sar Battalion, located opposite Al-Sakt prison.
Witnesses observed projectiles flying in various directions while a significant fire seemed to have erupted inside the depot. Ambulances and fire engines were reportedly heard rushing toward the scene.
Libya's Al-Marsad newspaper released footage allegedly showing ongoing explosions and flames within the ammunition depot owned by the Al-I'sar Battalion. The newspaper reported that projectiles from the site were landing in nearby areas. The Libya Press and Al-Wasat news websites shared similar footage and details regarding the incident.
Anadolu Agency noted that it could not independently verify the footage or reports of ammunition and rockets being propelled.
