Washington: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Thursday that significant progress has been made towards establishing a cease-fire in Lebanon, grounded on the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Speaking at a news conference in Washington, Blinken emphasized ongoing efforts to understand and implement the conditions necessary for the effective realization of the resolution. According to Anadolu Agency, Blinken, who recently visited the Middle East, noted that the involved parties have made "good progress" in understanding the requirements needed to achieve a diplomatic resolution, including establishing a cease-fire. He acknowledged that while steps have been taken, further work remains crucial to reach a comprehensive diplomatic solution. Blinken also highlighted the importance of having clear expectations from both Lebanon and Israel regarding the implementation of Resolution 1701. In addition to the discussions on Lebanon, Blinken addressed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. He acknowledged progress but described it as "insufficient," emphasizing that while efforts to allow aid trucks into Gaza are ongoing, it is equally "vital" to ensure that the aid is effectively distributed within the enclave. This statement stands in contrast to reports suggesting a lack of progress in the region.
