Gaza City: The International Criminal Court's (ICC) recent arrest warrants for Israeli leaders mark a pivotal shift in addressing Israel's actions against Palestinians, opening a 'new era' of accountability, says Palestinian human rights lawyer Raji Sourani. The ICC's move against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who are now wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is considered a 'landmark' decision that signals the end of decades-long impunity for Israel. According to Anadolu Agency, sourani emphasized that this development represents a significant change in how Israel will approach potential consequences in the future. He described the ongoing situation in Gaza, highlighting the genocide, massive killing, displacement, starvation, and blockade, and asserted that the ICC's actions would initiate a snowball effect of accountability that no power could halt. Sourani called for Israel to be held accountable not just morally, but legally, suggesting that cou rt decisions are foundational in combating colonialism, racism, and genocide. He urged concrete actions from international states to pressure Israel, such as halting arms shipments, ceasing economic support, ending facilitation, and stopping trade. Sourani reminded the international community of the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) ruling that Israel's continued presence in occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful and must end rapidly. He expressed hope for international support in aiding Palestinians, stressing the high cost of delayed accountability and the heavy toll on Palestinian lives. Sourani also underscored the need for broader investigations by the ICC, calling for charges against additional Israeli officials, including top military commanders. He warned that without further action, Gaza might become a graveyard for international law. Sourani criticized the US for its unwavering support of Israel despite evidence of war crimes, noting that US vetoes have hindered international efforts to end the genocide. He called for corrections within international institutions like the UN to avoid a descent into lawlessness. Furthermore, Sourani criticized remarks by France, including those suggesting Netanyahu's immunity due to Israel not being a party to the ICC, a claim refuted by legal experts. He referred to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell's statement that the ICC decision is legally binding, not political, and expressed hope for stronger actions against Israel and its leaders following this legal clarity.
