Virginia Farm Explosive Cache Marks Largest FBI Seizure

VIRGINIA: Federal agents have uncovered over 150 homemade explosive devices at a farm in Virginia, marking the largest such seizure in FBI history, as revealed in newly disclosed court documents. The discovery was made last month, and the operation has led to the arrest of Brad Spafford, aged 36, who is now facing serious charges.

According to Anadolu Agency, the FBI took Spafford into custody on December 17, 2024, following a tip-off regarding the stockpiling of weapons at his 20-acre property. The prosecutors presented evidence indicating that Spafford harbored extremist views, which included advocating for political assassinations and using images of President Joe Biden for target practice.

The investigation led agents to multiple locations on the property, including a detached garage and a bedroom, where they found pipe bombs and other explosive devices. Some of these devices were labeled as "lethal" or "dangerous," while a particularly unstable explosive was stored in a jar labeled "Do Not Touch," found in Spafford's freezer alongside food items.

Spafford currently faces charges of unlawful possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, with additional charges related to the explosives expected. Despite defense attorneys' requests for his release, prosecutors have argued that Spafford presents an extreme danger to the community.

The investigation was initiated after a neighbor raised concerns, particularly about a 2021 incident where Spafford lost three fingers on his right hand due to an explosion while handling a device. This incident added to the community's alarm and ultimately contributed to the FBI's intervention.
