Kremlin Asserts Security Guarantees Vital for Ukraine War Settlement

Moscow: Russia on Monday emphasized the importance of security guarantees as a crucial component in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which is approaching its third anniversary. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed the issue during a news briefing, highlighting its significance in the broader context of settling the conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, Peskov stated that while security guarantees are integral to discussions, it remains premature to engage in negotiations due to a lack of preconditions. He noted that Ukraine is currently unwilling to engage in talks on this subject. Peskov reiterated President Vladimir Putin's stance on Moscow's openness to dialogue with all countries, including the United States, regarding the conflict.

Peskov also mentioned the absence of "substantive preparations" for potential talks between Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump, who is scheduled to assume office on January 20. Despite this, many countries have expressed willingness to host such discussions. Peskov emphasized that any changes in the US approach to the Ukraine conflict could only be assessed after Trump's inauguration.

The Kremlin spokesman declined to comment on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal to exchange two allegedly captured North Korean soldiers for Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russia. Peskov expressed uncertainty about the accuracy of these claims.

Reports emerged that Ukrainian forces captured two injured North Korean soldiers in Russia's Kursk region, following an incursion by Kyiv in August 2024. While South Korea's National Intelligence Service has supported Ukraine's account, North Korea has yet to respond. Despite strengthened military ties between Russia and North Korea, there has been no confirmation of North Korean troops fighting for Moscow.
