Gaza: Since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli military bases and settlements near the outskirts of Gaza, Israel has been waging a war against the Strip for over 15 months. This conflict has resulted in devastating consequences for the people of Gaza, with at least 60,000 individuals killed or missing, and 140,000 injured, the majority of whom were women and children. Over 2 million Gazans have been displaced internally. The relentless onslaught has resulted in the destruction of hospitals, clinics, universities, schools, and residential buildings, leaving the entire city in ruins.
According to Anadolu Agency, for 470 days, this genocide in Gaza has unfolded in full view of the world, which has been unable to halt the aggression despite condemnation from over 170 nations. International bodies such as the UN, human rights organizations, and NGOs have repeatedly called for an end to the suffering. Meanwhile, the siege has led to severe shortages of medicine, food, water, electricity, and gas, exacerbating the dire humanitarian crisis. Despite global outcry, Israel has continued its campaign, supported by the US with over $22 billion in military aid and political backing.
Efforts by the UN and mediators like Egypt, Qatar, and the US to broker peace have been rejected by Israel. US President Joe Biden's proposal for a multi-phase deal was declined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also dismissed a similar plan by Egypt and Qatar. As these diplomatic efforts failed, Israel intensified its military actions, further displacing residents and destroying infrastructure.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Israel has not succeeded in eliminating Hamas or establishing control over Gaza. The Israeli military continues to suffer casualties, and strategic goals remain elusive. Observers note the heavy losses and lack of clear objectives in Israel's campaign.
As the conflict drags on, US President-elect Donald Trump seeks to avoid inheriting the crisis. Initially advocating for the destruction of Hamas, Trump has shifted focus to ending the war. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, warned Netanyahu of serious consequences if no agreement was reached, leading to a capitulation by Netanyahu.
Hamas and its partners have outlined five key conditions for any agreement: a permanent ceasefire, complete withdrawal from Gaza, a just prisoner exchange, aid for Palestinians, and large-scale reconstruction efforts. These conditions, now part of the new agreement, were previously rejected by Israel.
The outcome of this dark chapter underscores the resilience of the Palestinian people. Their resistance has led to an agreement that reflects their struggle for freedom and self-determination. Despite demands for unconditional surrender, the Palestinians have shown that their fight for liberation continues undeterred.
