Brussels: The European Union has issued a stern warning to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, indicating that it could face significant penalties, including fines, suspension, or an outright ban, if it fails to comply with the bloc's regulations. This statement was made by the EU Commission's Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Stephane Sejourne, during an interview with broadcaster France Inter.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sejourne highlighted that EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen had expanded the investigation into Elon Musk's X last week. This move seeks to establish a legal foundation to present the case before a judge. Sejourne underscored the importance of adhering to EU rules and mentioned that the commissioner's report would incorporate recent discussions, particularly those concerning Musk's political involvement in Europe. Musk recently voiced support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the upcoming general elections in Germany.

Sejourne outlined the potential consequences for non-compliance, noting that the report, once finalized, would be submitted to the judiciary. He emphasized that sanctions could be severe, potentially reaching billions of euros. Ultimately, if X fails to adhere to the regulations, it could face a ban or suspension from operating within the EU.

In a broader context, Sejourne also commented on the shifting dynamics of European defense as Donald Trump prepares to assume the US presidency. He acknowledged that while the United States remains an ally, its focus appears to be shifting towards recalibrating trade relations, prompting the EU to defend its interests. Sejourne advocated for European unity and the development of a robust European defense strategy, particularly in light of America's increasing focus on the Pacific region.
