According to Anadolu Agency, the renaming aligns with Trump's recent inaugural address, where he reiterated plans to unilaterally rename the Gulf of Mexico. This move is part of a broader agenda, which includes potential territorial expansions such as reclaiming the Panama Canal or taking control of Greenland, with Trump not ruling out the use of military force to achieve these ambitions.

In a pre-inauguration news conference, Trump emphasized the imminent name change, stating, "A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico," and expressing his preference for the term "Gulf of America," describing it as having "a beautiful ring."

While DeSantis's executive order aligns with the 'America First' agenda championed by Trump, it has raised questions regarding the president's authority to enact such a change solely through rhetoric. Despite these concerns, the focus remains on the imminent storm, with DeSantis declaring a state of emergency for what is expected to be a 'major disaster' involving severe winter weather conditions such as snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
