NASA Closing DEI Offices and Ending Contracts After Executive Order: Report

NASA: NASA has begun closing offices related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) and ending related contracts, as stated by Acting Administrator Janet Petro.

According to Anadolu Agency, Petro conveyed in a memo to employees that these programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in discrimination. The memo, dated January 22 and obtained by SpaceNews, outlines Petro's actions to implement an executive order by President Donald Trump, titled "Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing."

The memo further instructed employees to report any changes in contract descriptions or personnel positions since November 5, 2024, that might obscure connections to DEIA or similar ideologies. Employees were given a 10-day window to report to [email protected].

The Trump administration has mandated that all federal employees in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles be placed on paid leave by Wednesday evening. This directive came during the first full day of Trump's second presidency on Tuesday. The Office of Personnel Management issued the memo instructing federal agencies to prepare for the closure of all DEI-related offices and programs, and to remove associated websites and social media accounts.
