Nicosia: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar received UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Monday. The two met at the Presidential Office in Nicosia as part of DiCarlo's trip to the region, including Greece and Trkiye.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions centered around a comprehensive meeting on the Cyprus issue, scheduled for next month. This meeting aims to include representatives from Trkiye, the TRNC, Greece, the UK, and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. President Tatar emphasized the necessity for the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people as prerequisites for a constructive resolution in Cyprus.

President Tatar addressed reporters post-meeting, asserting that the Turkish Cypriot people are a fundamental component in Cyprus with inherent sovereignty rights. He informed DiCarlo that the TRNC supports the proposed meeting in Geneva on March 17-18. Tatar firmly stated that any agreement that complicates their lives will not be accepted, highlighting the need for a fair, permanent, and sustainable resolution that considers the Turkish Cypriot people's concerns and the historical context of the island's last 60 years.

Tatar criticized the ongoing embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot people as unacceptable, urging the UN to take action towards lifting these restrictions. He advocated for the initiation of direct flights, contact, and trade to the TRNC.

In a brief press statement, DiCarlo described the meeting as constructive, noting that they discussed the issues set to be addressed at the upcoming comprehensive meeting. She also mentioned plans to meet Greek Leader Nicos Christodoulides.
