Moscow: Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousif Sharif has announced that the establishment of a Russian naval base on Sudan's Red Sea coast remains a viable prospect, with negotiations progressing positively and without any obstacles.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sharif, during his official visit to Moscow, stated in an interview with the Russian RT channel that there are no disagreements between Sudan and Russia regarding the naval base. The Sudanese minister emphasized that the proposed base would not threaten any nation or compromise Sudan's sovereignty. He drew a parallel with Djibouti, which hosts several foreign military bases despite its strategic location in the Horn of Africa.

Sharif clarified that discussions did not center on new agreements, as a framework had already been signed between the two nations. "We did not discuss what we wanted to agree on, as this had already been signed in an agreement between the two countries, and there was no disagreement on this matter," he remarked.

Following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Sharif reiterated that both countries are "in complete agreement" regarding the naval base. "We have reached a mutual understanding on this issue. Therefore, the matter is very simple. . We have agreed on everything," he affirmed.

The initial understanding between Sudan and Russia to establish a Russian naval logistics hub on the Red Sea coast was reached in November 2020, marking a significant development in bilateral military cooperation.
