China Reiterates Opposition to US Tariffs Amid Trade Tensions

Beijing: China on Thursday reiterated its opposition to the unilateral additional tariffs imposed by the United States, as reported by state media. "Trade wars and tariff wars produce no winners and harm the interests of people in all countries," stated Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun during a press briefing in Beijing.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guo was responding to recent comments made by US President Donald Trump, who indicated the possibility of reaching a new trade deal with China. Guo emphasized the importance of resolving concerns through dialogue and consultation based on equality and mutual respect. He affirmed that China would continue to take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

In 2020, the US claimed to have secured "a great trade deal with China," and Trump suggested that a new agreement might be feasible. He mentioned a potential visit by China's President Xi Jinping to the US, although no timeline was provided. Trump also noted, "We'll have, ultimately, President Xi, we will have everybody coming (to the US)."

The trade tensions escalated when the US imposed additional customs duties of 10% on all products imported from China, prompting Beijing to retaliate with tariffs of up to 15% on targeted US imports. In response, China lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization. Additionally, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all imported cars and recently signed executive orders for new 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, effective from March 12.

Furthermore, China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed "strong dissatisfaction" over the additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods in a letter to newly appointed US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Wang highlighted the significance of economic and trade relations as a crucial component of China-US relations, stressing the importance of cooperation between the world's two largest economies for global economic growth.

Wang stated that China is "willing to work with the US to enhance dialogue, manage differences, and promote cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation." He emphasized the need for a fair and predictable policy environment to facilitate practical cooperation between the business communities of both nations.
