Johannesburg: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the official opening of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Johannesburg. More than 30 countries will be represented in the two-day summit, which will take place at the Nasrec Expo Centre under South Africa's G20 presidency. The focus will be on the theme of 'Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola engaged in bilateral talks with his Norwegian, Dutch, and Brazilian counterparts-Espen Barth Eide, Caspar Veldkamp, and Mauro Vieira-along with UN deputy chief Amina Mohammed. These discussions occurred on the sidelines of the foreign ministers' meeting.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, speaking to local broadcaster SABC, emphasized the need for a free Palestine through a two-state solution. He stressed that Palestine must include Gaza, the West Bank, and relevant parts of Jerusalem. Eide noted the current situation as a temporary ceasefire, urging the use of the present momentum to push for a Palestinian state.
According to SABC, the United States will be represented by its diplomatic mission in Pretoria. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously announced he would not attend the meeting due to Washington halting aid to South Africa over a new land appropriation law and South Africa's actions in bringing Israel to the International Court of Justice over its war on Gaza.
