Washington: The US and Ukraine are nearing an agreement involving rare earth materials as part of a deal expected to be formalized during a meeting between the countries' leaders in Washington on Friday.
According to Anadolu Agency, US President Donald Trump has been vocal about seeking recompense for the substantial aid provided to Ukraine during its ongoing conflict, which began three years ago. Despite official figures stating that the US has allocated $174 billion since February 2022, Trump insists on receiving tangible returns, specifically rare earth materials and oil, as compensation for the financial support.
Trump has emphasized the necessity of recovering some of the funds, suggesting that the agreement will enable the US to acquire mining rights for rare earth materials in Ukraine. The deal is anticipated to be signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Trump.
While specific details of the agreement remain undisclosed, Zelenskyy has confirmed that it includes security guarantees for Ukraine and has refuted claims of incurring a substantial debt. Ukrainian officials have expressed optimism about the potential success of the agreement, pending further discussions with Trump.
Ukraine is recognized as a leading nation in rare mineral resources, possessing approximately 5% of the world's mineral reserves. These include critical minerals such as lithium, titanium, and uranium, which are crucial for various technological and industrial applications. The country also ranks prominently in the production of minerals like gallium and neon gas, essential for semiconductor and LED manufacturing.
The impending deal is seen as a strategic move by the US to harness Ukraine's abundant mineral resources, potentially reducing dependence on China's rare earth supply and bolstering America's industrial production. However, some resources, notably in the Donetsk and Dnieper-Donetsk regions, remain under Russian control or near conflict zones, complicating the full exploitation of Ukraine's mineral wealth.
