Myawaddy: More than 620 Chinese nationals involved in telecom fraud have been repatriated from Myanmar's southeastern Myawaddy region, China's Ministry of Public Security announced on Monday. The repatriation process is a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat cross-border telecommunications and online fraud in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the repatriation follows a ministerial-level meeting in Bangkok on Friday, where officials from China, Myanmar, and Thailand discussed strategies to address and combat the increasing issue of cross-border crimes related to telecommunications and online activities. The meeting resulted in an agreement among the three nations to enhance cross-border law enforcement cooperation and intensify efforts to crack down on these illegal activities.

The statement from the meeting described it as a key milestone in regional efforts to curb telecommunications fraud. The collaborative approach aims to address the persistent rise in such crimes, which have been facilitated by criminal syndicates operating call centers in the region.

The repatriation of the Chinese nationals was also influenced by pressure from the Chinese government and Thailand, which recently suspended power, oil, and internet services in affected areas. These call centers, operated by criminal syndicates, employ foreign workers, many of whom have reported being trafficked and coerced into executing online scams that defraud victims worldwide. The cooperation among the involved nations marks a significant step toward dismantling these criminal networks and protecting potential victims globally.
