Kabul: The interim Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan has called upon the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to make 'concerted efforts' towards the removal of what it describes as 'unjust' sanctions on the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, the call from the Taliban administration, which refers to itself as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, came in response to the UN Security Council's decision to extend UNAMA's mandate in Kabul. The extension is set to last until March 17, 2026, signaling continued international engagement with Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid emphasized the need for UNAMA to strengthen the relationship between Afghanistan, the United Nations, and other nations. He highlighted the importance of reflecting Afghanistan's security, economic, and social progress while safeguarding the international rights of Afghan citizens. Mujahid also stressed the need for the removal of sanctions, addressing financial misappropriation, and restoring Afghanistan's rightful representation within the UN framework.

Furthermore, Mujahid urged UNAMA to avoid creating unnecessary concerns and to refrain from using isolated issues for propaganda purposes or as leverage for partisan agendas. The Taliban's return to power in August 2021 followed the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces, ending decades of conflict in the nation. The group now seeks to secure Afghanistan's position within the international community and lift the economic constraints that have impacted the country's development.
