China: China's global initiative "offers a new lease on hope" in an era where "economic tribalism" is growing and multilateral cooperation is under threat, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated after meeting China's President Xi Jinping. The meeting took place on Wednesday and emphasized the challenges of current global economic dynamics.

According to Anadolu Agency, Anwar Ibrahim remarked, "What we are witnessing today is not an honest reckoning with the imperfections of globalization, but a retreat into economic tribalism." He further explained that market access is being used as a tool for power struggles, and what was once a multilateral agreement for collective growth is now facing disruption and unilateral actions.

During the visit, both leaders signed 31 cooperation agreements covering a range of topics from artificial intelligence to mutual visa exemptions and global security. Malaysia is the second destination in Xi Jinping's three-nation tour of Southeast Asia, following his visit to Vietnam. Xi is scheduled to travel to Cambodia on Thursday.

Anwar's comments are set against the backdrop of an ongoing trade war between the United States and China, with the US imposing tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports. In response, Beijing has levied 125% tariffs on US imports. Despite these tensions, Anwar affirmed Malaysia's steady alliance with China, stating that Malaysia remains an "unwavering and principled friend" of the nation.

"Facing the rise of unilateralism, Malaysia is willing to strengthen cooperation with China to jointly address risks and challenges," Anwar added. This visit highlights China's efforts to reinforce its relationships with Southeast Asian economies in light of escalating trade tensions initiated by US President Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, President Xi also had a meeting with Malaysia's king, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, further strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
