Jerusalem: Israel's Supreme Court has declined a request by the Israeli government to lift a temporary freeze on the dismissal of Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar.
According to Anadolu Agency, the government asked the court to terminate its temporary injunction on Bar's dismissal, arguing that it compromises the principle of separation of powers. Nevertheless, the court ruled that Bar will continue in his role with full jurisdictional authority.
The Supreme Court, Israel's highest judicial entity, also dismissed the government's assertion that the injunction undermines its security authority. "There is no basis for the argument that the government's power in the security domain has been usurped," stated a court document referenced by the daily Yedioth Ahronoth.
On March 20, the Israeli government, in a unanimous decision, approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal to dismiss Bar, marking an unprecedented move in the country's history despite significant public protests. However, the Supreme Court issued an interim injunction, requiring Bar to remain in office until a resolution is reached between the government and the Attorney General's Office regarding his dismissal.
The court's decision also included a recommendation for the government and the attorney general to negotiate a settlement by April 20. On April 1, Netanyahu announced the appointment of former Navy Commander Eli Sharvit as the new Shin Bet chief but later withdrew the decision following internal criticism and revelations about Sharvit's participation in protests against the government earlier in 2023.
Bar's dismissal has been a focal point amid Israel's ongoing military actions in the Gaza Strip, where more than 51,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been reported killed since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its military operations in the region.
