Washington: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed its commitment to assist Syria in rebuilding its institutions and reintegrating into the global economy. This announcement was made by IMF General Director Kristalina Georgieva during a press conference held as part of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings.
According to Anadolu Agency, Georgieva stated that a meeting was held with Syrian officials this week, marking the first time in over two decades that representatives from Syria, including the governor of the Central Bank and the finance minister, have participated in the Spring Meetings. She emphasized that the IMF's primary intention is to help Syria rebuild its institutions and reconnect with the global economic system.
Jihad Azour, the director of the IMF's Middle East and Central Asia Department, provided further insights into the discussions with Syria at a press conference focused on Middle Eastern and Central Asian economies. Azour noted that Syria has been largely absent from the international stage due to the ongoing conflict, and its interaction with the IMF has been minimal since 2011. The last Article 4 consultation between the IMF and Syria took place in 2009.
Azour highlighted the international community's active involvement in exploring ways for Syria to recover from the prolonged war. He mentioned a preparatory meeting held in February, where regional institutions and the international community convened to plan the next steps for follow-up and coordination. The subsequent coordination meeting occurred on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from international organizations to evaluate Syria's needs and establish a framework for cooperation.
