Shanghai: China's President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged the country's coastal hub of Shanghai to take the lead in developing artificial intelligence. "AI technology is evolving rapidly and entering a phase of explosive growth," said Xi, visiting the Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center in the metropolis.

According to Anadolu Agency, the center, with over 100 firms, serves as a large model incubator designed for the incubation and acceleration of large models of artificial intelligence. Xi emphasized that AI is entering a phase of "explosive growth" and encouraged Shanghai to enhance its exploration efforts to lead AI development and governance.

Xi's visit to the city followed a recent meeting of a study group focused on AI, during which he underscored the importance of gaining a head start in this critical area. In addition to his focus on AI, Xi also visited the New Development Bank of the BRICS bloc in Shanghai. The BRICS group, originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded last year by adding five new members.

During his visit, the Chinese leader congratulated Dilma Rousseff on her reelection as bank president. He described the foundation of the New Development Bank as "a pioneering effort of the Global South to unite and strengthen itself," aligning with the historical trend of reforming and improving global governance. Xi noted that the bank has evolved into a significant force within the international financial system, representing a "golden signboard" for cooperation in the global South.

Xi also highlighted the "collective rise of the Global South" as an important force in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, and improving global governance. He asserted that, irrespective of changes in the international situation, the overall direction of human development and progress remains constant.
