Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emphasized the critical nature of Trkiye's efforts to promote peace and stability in a changing global landscape, with a particular focus on the strategic relationship between Ankara and Washington.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan highlighted the importance of the Trkiye-US partnership in establishing regional and global stability. "We are striving to create a constructive and result-oriented dialogue platform," he stated during his return flight to Trkiye after an official visit to Tirana, Albania, where he attended a European Political Community session.
Erdogan urged renewed focus on shared values and strategic alignment, especially within NATO's framework. Addressing issues related to defense cooperation and sanctions, he noted a softening in the CAATSA sanctions process, expressing optimism for a quicker resolution.
Trkiye faced sanctions under the CAATSA for acquiring Russia's S-400 missile defense system in 2020. Erdogan insisted on unrestricted defense collaboration between the allies, emphasizing the need for removing barriers harming the strategic alliance.
The Turkish president acknowledged recent progress, citing the US State Department's approval of a $300 million air-to-air missile sale to Trkiye as a positive step.
In discussing Syria, Iraq, and terrorism, Erdogan called for European responsibility in countering terrorism and initiating reconstruction in Syria. He praised the US decision to lift sanctions on Syria and highlighted Trkiye's strong ties with the Syrian government, noting productive discussions with Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa.
On counterterrorism, Erdogan stressed the importance of disarming terrorist organizations like the PKK and indicated ongoing discussions with neighboring countries to tackle cross-border terrorism.
Regarding the Ukraine war and the Pakistan-India conflict, Erdogan reaffirmed Trkiye's commitment to mediation and diplomacy, urging European support for the diplomatic efforts involving leaders from the US, Russia, and Ukraine. He also expressed willingness to mediate between Pakistan and India if requested.
Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, Erdogan called for active European involvement and an end to Israeli military aggression. He advocated for a two-state solution as the path to lasting peace, urging immediate action to stop the violence in Gaza.
