Perth: Astronomers have detected a mysterious object in deep space that releases intense bursts of radio waves and X-rays, according to a new study published on Wednesday. The object, named ASKAP J1832-0911, is located around 15,000 light-years from Earth within the Milky Way.
According to Anadolu Agency, the study published in the journal Nature highlights that the object emits pulses lasting two minutes every 44 minutes. Despite these regular intervals, the reason behind this phenomenon remains unclear. This marks the first observation of a long-period transient (LPT) emitting both high-energy X-rays and low-energy radio waves.
Astronomers from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), collaborating with global partners, have noted that long-period radio transients, recently detectable due to advances in telescope technology, emit signals over tens of minutes. These signals challenge traditional pulsar models, presenting a new puzzle for astrophysicists to solve.
Lead author Ziteng Wang stated, "This object is unlike anything we have seen before." Researchers are considering that the object might be a magnetar, which is a dead star's core with strong magnetic fields, or it could be part of a binary system where one star is a highly magnetized white dwarf in its final evolutionary stage.
However, Wang added, "Even those theories do not fully explain what we are observing. This discovery could indicate a new type of physics or new models of stellar evolution." The researchers emphasized that finding one such object suggests that many more may exist, and the transient X-ray emission detection provides new insights into their enigmatic nature.
